National Poppy Day®

May 25, 2018

The red poppy is a nationally recognized symbol of sacrifice worn by Americans since World War I to honor those who served and died for our country in all wars. It reminds Americans of the sacrifices made by our veterans while protecting our freedoms. Wear a poppy to honor those who have worn our nation's uniform.

The American Legion will celebrate its 99th birthday on March 15. It is the day in 1919 when the first American Legion caucus, held by members of the American Expeditionary Force, convened in Paris.

Brian Duensing Named 2018 American Legion Baseball Graduate Of The Year

Brian Duensing, currently of the Chicago Cubs, has been named the 2018 American Legion Baseball Graduate of the Year.

Each year the American Legion Baseball Graduate of the Year honors a former Legion player who is currently playing in the Major Leagues for his character, leadership, playing abilities and community service. Individuals are recommended by their respective post.

When Rena Nessler was commander of the Department of New York’s 7th District, a fellow Legionnaire approached her during a membership drive. “It is so nice to see the Auxiliary here helping The American Legion,” he said to Nessler, who was wearing her Legion cap at the time.
